Lovelyamma J. Varghese, DNP, MSN, FNP, RN, NPD-BC, NEA-BC, Coldiron Fellow, is a transformational nurse leader, scholar, and educator with more than 25 years of progressive leadership experience across inpatient, ambulatory, sub-acute, and long-term care settings. She currently serves as Senior Director of Nursing Education and Performance Improvement at NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem, where she leads system-wide initiatives in clinical excellence, professional development, and quality improvement.
Dr. Varghese has driven major institutional achievements, including significant reductions in hospital-acquired infections and patient falls, attainment of Beacon and Surgical Safety designations, and award-winning improvements in nursing-sensitive outcomes. Her career includes senior executive leadership roles in some of the nation’s most respected health systems, where she has consistently advanced patient safety, clinical outcomes, and staff engagement. She also brings more than two decades of academic teaching experience in transcultural nursing, medical-surgical nursing, and mental health nursing.
An active researcher and contributor to groundbreaking studies—including COVID-19 therapeutic trials—Dr. Varghese has authored and co-authored influential publications on seamless nurse transitions, patient safety, and health equity. She is widely recognized for her pioneering research on seamless transition in nursing orientation and practice integration, published in Nurse Leader. A sought-after national and international speaker, she has been honored with multiple awards, including the Structural Empowerment Award, Trailblazer Award, ClearMark Award for patient education, and the AAMC Spencer Foreman Award for community service.
A dedicated mentor and advocate for advancing nursing practice, Dr. Varghese is an active member of the American Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau International, the American Academy of Ambulatory Care Nursing, and the American Association of Diabetes Educators. She continues to serve her community and profession through leadership, volunteerism, and education.
